With the new year comes the fourth issue of Spacial Magazine. Editor-in-chief Eva Slunečková introduces its central theme: Nourishment — and offers a glimpse of what’s inside. Gaston Bachelard described beauty as “nourishment for the soul,” recognizing that the objects around us have the power to enrich our minds and spirits. Just as food sustains the body, our surroundings — art, objects, and spaces — shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

This is also an important topic for Patrik Schumacher of Zaha Hadid Architects. We spoke to him about the similarities between natural and urban organisms and about our instinctive need for beauty. Schumacher is convinced that people are subconsciously attracted or repelled by their environment on a non-rational level.

The need to build your inner strength is the subject of the opening essay, Nurture Your Life Force, by Amy J. Hughes, curator of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. In it, she examines the spiritual qualities of River of Life, the legendary 1970 work by the Czechoslovak glassmaking duo Libenský – Brychtová, and finds parallels with the current state of the world.

The personality of Jaroslava Brychtová is more deeply explored on our pages as well. As a woman, this half of the famous Libenský – Brychtová duo has often been omitted from the narrative, but this time we turn the spotlight on her and her alone. We look at nourishment in the sense of care and responsibility for one’s surroundings in the article Fair and Square and also in Rediscovering the Essence.

Using the example of Daniela Hradilová’s Between Meadows boutique guesthouse, we show how it’s possible to take a considered and conscientious approach to caring for cultural heritage. And we haven’t forgotten about food as a source of nourishment either! We invite you to a conceptual banquet that attends to our physical needs as well as our spiritual side – both hungry mouths and souls longing for refined aesthetics will be sated. See food according to Daniel and Nina Libeskind, Lara Bohinc and David Rockwell.

Among inspiring interviews and enriching articles, the magazine also showcases international bespoke glass installations by Lasvit, from the crimson-woven glow in La Mamounia, Morocco, to the colorful dance at the Seaport Science Center in Boston.

So tuck into this nourishing fourth issue of Spacial magazine. We’re sure it will satisfy your aesthetic cravings while offering a feast of food for thought on what truly enriches us – on both the physical and mental level.
